Truebill Alternatives: The App Is Rocket Money Now

App Comparisons · The Subgrove Team · · 5 min read

Short answer: Truebill no longer exists. It was renamed Rocket Money in 2022 after Rocket Companies acquired it. Same app, same bank-linked subscription detection, new name and new owner. So "Truebill alternatives" and "Rocket Money alternatives" are the same search — you're just using the name you remember.

That's worth knowing before you shop, because it changes what you're comparing against. The thing you'd be leaving isn't the scrappy 2019 startup you have in your head. It's a subscription product inside a mortgage company, with a $7–14/month Premium slider and a bill-negotiation fee that takes 35–60% of your first year's savings. We broke the full arithmetic down in how much Rocket Money costs.

Why People Still Search the Old Name

Four years after a rename, the old name should be dead. It isn't, and the reason is informative: a lot of the people typing "Truebill" stopped using it around the acquisition. They remember the product they signed up for, not the one it became. Others hit a paywall on a feature that used to feel included, went looking for options, and reached for the name in their memory.

Either way, if you're here you almost certainly want one of three things. They lead to different answers, so it's worth being honest about which one is yours.

1. You Want What Truebill Originally Did

The original pitch was narrow: find the recurring charges hiding in your bank feed, and help you kill the ones you don't want. Everything since — budgeting, net worth, credit score monitoring — is scope that grew around it.

If that original job is all you want, you are overpaying for a money suite you don't use. The narrow version of that job is a subscription tracker: a list of what you pay, what it costs per month, and a warning before it renews.

The trade is that you type the list yourself instead of a bank connection guessing at it. For the 5–12 subscriptions most people actually have, that's a couple of minutes once. What you get back is that nothing is ever missed because it didn't look like a subscription in your transaction feed — the annual charges, the ones billed to a partner's card, the ones through the App Store.

2. You Want Off the Price

The Premium slider is $7–14/month, and the features are identical across the range, so there's no reason to pay above the floor. Annualised that's $84–168/year, before the negotiation fee.

Here's the honest comparison table for the tracking half of the job:

App Platforms Bank linking Price
Rocket Money (ex-Truebill) iOS, Android, web Required $7–14/mo Premium
Subgrove iPhone, Android, desktop (PWA) Never Free to 5 subs · $15 once for lifetime
Bobby iOS only No ~$2–3 one-time
Tilla Android only No Free to 5 subs · $4.99 one-time
Wallos Self-hosted No Free, but you run the server

Two things that table makes obvious. Bobby and Tilla are cheaper than everything else — genuinely, and we're not going to pretend otherwise. If you have an iPhone and only an iPhone, or an Android and only an Android, and one currency, they're excellent and you should look at them. Our Bobby review is not a hit piece.

The catch is in the platform column. Bobby cannot be installed on Android. Tilla cannot be installed on an iPhone. Neither is a real option for a household with both, or for anyone who wants the same list on a laptop. That's the structural gap, and it's the one Subgrove is built for — it's a PWA, so the same install works on iPhone, Android and desktop, and it handles multiple currencies in one honest total.

Wallos is the free, open-source, self-hosted answer, and it's a good project. It also means a $5–10/month server, Docker, and update duty forever — see Wallos without the server for the trade in full.

3. You Want It Somewhere Rocket Money Doesn't Reach

If you're outside the United States, this decision is already made for you. Rocket Money's own help centre states it is "only available to users located within the United States and with U.S based banks." Truebill never reached you either — the restriction predates the rename and outlived it.

That means every bank-linked alternative inherits the same question: which country's banking system was it built against? We've written the honest version for the UK, Canada, Australia, Europe and India.

A manual tracker sidesteps the question entirely. There's no banking rail to be locked out of when you're typing in a list.

What You'd Actually Give Up

Being straight about it, because you'll find out anyway: Rocket Money's two headline features are cancelling subscriptions on your behalf and negotiating your bills. Subgrove does neither, and no manual tracker does. We show you what you're paying and warn you before it renews — you do the cancelling. Our guide to cancelling anything covers the same ground the concierge would, for free.

You also give up automatic detection. That's the real trade, and it's not nothing. It's a permanent live connection to your chequing account versus two minutes of typing. Plenty of people take that deal happily; some won't, and that's a fair call to make either way.

Where to Start

Do the sweep first, so the list is real rather than the one you can remember: finding forgotten subscriptions walks through statements, email searches and the Apple and Google subscription pages, which is where the forgotten ones actually live.

Then sign up if it fits. Free covers your first five subscriptions; $15 once covers them forever.

Common Questions

Is Truebill still available? No. Truebill was rebranded as Rocket Money in 2022. Old links and app-store listings redirect to Rocket Money, and there is no separate Truebill app to download.

Is Truebill the same as Rocket Money? Yes — same product, renamed after Rocket Companies acquired it. The full breakdown of what changed covers pricing, scope and ownership.

Is Truebill available in the UK? No, and it never was. Rocket Money is US-only and requires a US bank account, which the UK rename didn't change. See Rocket Money alternatives for the UK.

What is the best free Truebill alternative? For tracking without a bank connection, Subgrove is free for your first five subscriptions on any device, and Wallos is fully free if you're willing to self-host. Bobby (iOS) and Tilla (Android) have free tiers but are locked to one platform each.

Why does Rocket Money cost more than it used to? Premium settled into a $7–14/month "pay-what's-fair" slider, and bill negotiation carries a separate success fee of 35–60% of your first year's savings on top. The cost breakdown puts real numbers on a typical first year.
