Why the total is always higher than you think
When C+R Research asked 1,000 Americans in 2022 to guess their monthly subscription spend, the average answer was about $86. When those same people then itemized each subscription one by one, the real average came to $219 a month — a $133 gap, and close to $2,600 a year (as CNBC reported). That gap is the whole problem. A $2.99 app, a $9.99 streaming add-on, an annual plan that renews once and disappears from memory — individually they feel trivial, so the total never gets added up. Adding it up is the first step to cutting it down.
How to calculate your subscription costs
- 1. List every recurring charge. Scan a full 12 months of statements plus your Apple and Google Play subscriptions — annual ones only show up once and are the easiest to miss.
- 2. Put them on the same footing. Weekly, quarterly, and yearly prices aren't comparable until you convert them to one period. Enter each with its real billing cycle above and the calculator does the math.
- 3. Read the annual number.The yearly figure is the one that changes behaviour — “$16 a month” sounds fine until you see it as $192 a year for something you last opened in March.
- 4. Cancel, then track the rest. Cancel what you don't use before its next renewal, then keep the keepers somewhere that reminds you before each charge.
