How the subscription calculator works
- It starts with three example rows. Edit or remove them, add your own with “Add a subscription”, or tap a quick-add service to drop in its US price, which you can change.
- Every row is converted to a monthly cost. Weekly prices are multiplied by 52 and divided by 12, quarterly prices are divided by 3 and yearly prices by 12. The monthly costs are added together, and the yearly total is that sum times 12.
- It shows where the money goes. Quick-add services carry a category (Streaming, Music, Software and so on) and the bar under the total splits your yearly spend by category. Rows you type yourself count as “Other”.
- One currency, no conversion. Amounts are labelled in dollars. If you pay in another currency, enter every price in that currency and read the total the same way; if you pay in several, total each one separately.
- Saved in your browser.The list is kept in this browser's local storage, so it survives a reload. There is no account, and the amounts you type are not sent to a server.
How much do I spend on subscriptions?
Probably more than you'd guess. When C+R Research surveyed 1,000 US consumers in April and May 2022, the average first guess at monthly subscription spend was $86. When the same people itemized each subscription, the average was $219 a month, about $2,600 a year. In the same survey, 74% said recurring charges are easy to forget and 42% had stopped using a subscription they were still paying for. The gap comes from how subscriptions are billed. The charges are small, so none of them looks worth checking. They are spread across a credit card, Apple or Google Play, and PayPal, so no single statement shows them all. Annual plans renew once in a random week and are forgotten for the other eleven months.
How to calculate total subscription costs
- 1. List every recurring charge. Go through 12 months of card and bank statements plus your Apple and Google Play subscriptions. Annual charges appear only once a year, so a shorter window misses them. The free subscription finder can flag repeating charges in a pasted statement.
- 2. Note each billing cycle. A $60 yearly plan and a $5 monthly plan cost the same per month, but you can only see that once both are on the same period. Enter each with its real cycle in the calculator above.
- 3. Read the yearly total.“$16 a month” sounds small; $192 a year for something you last opened in March is easier to judge.

How do I work out the annual cost of a monthly subscription?
Multiply the monthly price by 12: $15.99 a month is $191.88 a year. For a weekly charge, multiply by 52. The calculator does this for every row and adds them up, so it works as a monthly subscription calculator and an annual subscription cost calculator at once.
How do I add up subscriptions billed weekly, quarterly or yearly?
Convert each one to the same period before adding. Weekly prices are multiplied by 52 and divided by 12, quarterly prices are divided by 3, and yearly prices are divided by 12. Pick the billing cycle for each row and the calculator does the conversion, so a $120 yearly plan counts as $10 a month.
Does the calculator work in pounds, euros or other currencies?
It works in one currency at a time and labels every amount with a $ sign. If you pay in pounds or euros, type each price in that currency and read the total in that currency. It does not convert between currencies, so if you pay in more than one, add up each currency separately. The quick-add prices are US prices.
Does the subscription spending calculator save my list or need an account?
There is no signup, email or bank connection. Your list is saved in your own browser's local storage, so it is still there when you come back on the same device and browser. The amounts you type are not sent to a server. Clearing your browser's site data resets the list.
