Subscription Tracker App for Canada (2026)
App Comparisons · The Subgrove Team · · Updated · 4 min read
Short answer: most of the subscription trackers Canadians read about require a US bank connection and won't work with RBC, TD, Scotiabank, BMO or CIBC, so the reliable route is a manual tracker that holds CAD and USD side by side. Rocket Money's help centre puts it plainly: the app is "only available to users located within the United States and with U.S. based banks." Copilot Money's help centre says "we only support US financial institutions and as such are only available in the US App Store." One well-known app, Monarch Money, does operate in Canada; we'll be fair to it below.
Why Most US Trackers Don't Cross the Border
A bank-linked tracker sells automatic detection: connect an account through a data aggregator, scan the feed for repeating charges. The aggregators behind the US apps reach American institutions. A National Bank, Tangerine or EQ Bank account is outside their map, and every downstream feature goes with it.
Canada is building its own framework: the Consumer-Driven Banking Act became law in spring 2026, draft regulations followed that summer, and phase one is read-only account data sharing overseen by the Bank of Canada. That will let Canadian-built apps read Canadian accounts with consent. It changes nothing for an app never built to use it.
Which Apps Actually Work Here
| Works in Canada | Needs bank linking | Multi-currency total | iPhone + Android | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rocket Money | No — US banks only | Yes | No (USD) | Yes |
| Copilot Money | No — US App Store only | Yes | No (USD only) | No — iPhone, iPad, Mac, web |
| Monarch Money | Yes, billed in USD | Yes | Not stated by vendor | Not stated by vendor |
| Your bank's app | Yes, for that bank | Built in | No | Yes |
| Subgrove | Yes | No | Yes, per currency | Yes (PWA) |
On Monarch, to be fair: its site says "Monarch now available in Canada" and "All prices are billed in USD." Its help centre also warns that some Canadian banks are hard to connect or keep synced because they don't support third-party aggregators, and suggests using the trial to "confirm your institutions connect reliably." If you want bank-linked budgeting and your bank cooperates, it's a real option. If you want to track subscriptions without handing over a bank login, that's Subgrove's job.
The CAD-and-USD Problem
A large share of what Canadians subscribe to bills in US dollars: software, AI tools, creator platforms, some streaming plans. The statement amount shifts with the exchange rate every month.
Copilot's help centre admits it "only supports USD and does not convert foreign currency transactions." You need a tracker where a Crave plan in CAD and a cloud storage plan in USD sit side by side, each counted in its own currency with its own monthly total.
The Checklist
- No bank connection required. See tracking without bank linking for what you gain and lose.
- Per-subscription currency with a total for each currency: multi-currency subscription tracking.
- A reminder you control ahead of each renewal; iOS setup is in renewal reminders on iPhone.
- Works on iPhone and Android together; see subscription tracker for iPhone and Android.
- No geography check. An app that never asks where you bank can't turn you away.
Doing It in Subgrove
Subgrove is built for that list. Add each subscription once, with its currency and next renewal date, and the app keeps the total and calendar current.
- CAD and USD totals side by side, on the dashboard and in the yearly projection.
- Push reminders at the lead time you choose, so the cancel-or-keep decision happens before the charge.
- Installs anywhere. It's a PWA: home-screen app on any phone, same account on a laptop, works offline.
- Take your data with you. One-click export is covered in subscription tracker with CSV export.
The free subscription cost calculator shows the total in your browser, no account needed.
What Subgrove Doesn't Do
No automatic detection. You enter subscriptions yourself, so a forgotten one stays hidden until an audit turns it up.
No cancelling or negotiating for you. Subgrove flags the renewal; you act. See cancel any subscription.
Not a budgeting app. No net worth, no whole-account categories. Monarch does those; Subgrove deliberately doesn't.
Your bank's app shows pre-authorized debits for that account only; a second card or an App Store charge is invisible to it.
Getting Started
Audit first: finding forgotten subscriptions covers statements, email receipts and the Apple and Google Play pages. Then add each subscription in its billing currency and set a reminder.
Sign up from anywhere in Canada. The free plan covers five subscriptions. Upgrades bill in USD, so check your card's foreign-transaction fee.
Common Questions
Does Rocket Money work in Canada? No. Its help centre says it is "only available to users located within the United States and with U.S. based banks." Details in Rocket Money in Canada.
Does Monarch Money work in Canada? Yes. Its site says "Monarch now available in Canada," billed in USD; it notes some Canadian banks connect unreliably.
Do I have to link my bank? No. Subgrove never asks for a bank login.
Can I track CAD and USD together? Yes. Each subscription keeps its currency and the dashboard shows a CAD total and a USD total side by side. Nothing is converted at a live exchange rate, so neither figure drifts.
Is there an Android app? Yes, as a PWA. Install from Chrome on Android or Safari on iPhone; the same account opens on desktop.
