How to Cancel Planet Fitness Membership (3 Ways)

Sign in at planetfitness.com, open your account, and end the membership in the member portal; if that option isn't offered to you, cancel at your home club in person or by sending it a letter. Those are the three routes Planet Fitness lists in its customer service FAQ: "send written notification via mail to your home club," "visit your home club in person, or log into your account online through the member portal on the website." The same answer warns that "some policies and procedures may vary by location based on state and local guidelines," so the online route isn't guaranteed for every club.

The method matters less than the date. Planet Fitness bills on fixed days, and a request that lands a few days late costs you another month of dues or a full annual fee. Here is how to do each route and when to get it in.

The deadlines that decide what you still pay

Planet Fitness spells out its cut-offs in the same FAQ answer on ending a membership:

• Monthly dues are billed on the 17th. To stop that draft, "the club must receive notice of your request to end your membership by the 10th of the month, as it may take up to 7 business days for billing changes to take effect." Miss the 10th and expect one more charge on the 17th.
• The annual fee has its own cut-off. "To stop the billing of the annual fee, your request must be received by the club by the 25th of the month prior to the annual fee date." The membership page lists that fee as $49.
• Commitment memberships carry a buyout. If your plan has a minimum term and you leave before it's up, "a $58 buyout fee is required." No Commitment memberships, per the membership page, "may cancel at anytime without paying a fee."

So the practical rule is: know your annual fee month, and send your request before the 25th of the month before it, and before the 10th of whatever month you want to be your last.

Finding your annual fee date

The fee doesn't announce itself, which is why it's the charge people dispute most after "cancelling." Planet Fitness says your billing details are online or in the PF App under My Billing Info & Balance. A faster check: search last year's bank or card statement for a $49 Planet Fitness charge. The month it posted is the month to plan around.

Route 1: cancel Planet Fitness online

1. Sign in at planetfitness.com with the email you used to join. The FAQ describes cancellation through "the member portal on the website"; it doesn't mention the PF App, so use a browser.
2. Open your membership details in My Account and look for the option to end your membership.
3. Follow it through to a confirmation and save the confirmation page or email, with the date.
4. If no cancel option appears, your club's state or local rules may handle it differently. Don't wait for it to show up; use one of the two routes below before the 10th.

Because policies vary by location, treat the confirmation as the only proof that counts. A request you started but didn't finish won't stop the 17th's draft.

Route 2: cancel in person at your home club

Your home club is the one on your membership agreement, not necessarily the one you use most. Planet Fitness routes billing and membership questions to the home club first, so that's where the request needs to land.

1. Go when the front desk is staffed, since a team member has to process the request.
2. Bring photo ID and your PF Club Pass or key tag number.
3. Ask to end the membership today and have it processed while you wait.
4. Leave with something in writing: a copy of the form or an email showing the date your request was received. A spoken "you're all set" won't help you if a charge appears on the 17th.

If you've moved or the club has closed, the FAQ says to contact Planet Fitness member services, which it lists as open Monday to Friday, 9 am to 6 pm Eastern.

Route 3: cancel by mail (send it certified)

Planet Fitness accepts "written notification via mail to your home club." It doesn't require certified mail, but certified with a return receipt gives you a dated record of when the club received the letter, and that date is what the 10th and 25th deadlines are measured against.

1. Look up your home club's street address with the club locator on planetfitness.com.
2. Write a short dated letter (template below) and keep a copy.
3. Mail it USPS Certified Mail with return receipt, early enough to arrive before the deadline that matters to you. Postage dates don't count; receipt dates do.
4. File the receipt and the delivery confirmation until you've seen a statement with no dues and no annual fee.

You don't need to give a reason. A reason only invites an offer to downgrade or freeze.

Fees you might still owe, and what isn't refundable

• One last month of dues if the club gets your request after the 10th.
• The $49 annual fee if your request arrives after the 25th of the month before it posts.
• A $58 buyout if you're inside a commitment term.
• Any overdue balance. Planet Fitness says it doesn't take partial payments on an overdue balance and sends you to your home club to sort it out.

If a charge posts after your confirmed date, take your confirmation or certified-mail receipt to the home club first. Put the 25th on your calendar before it costs $49

The annual fee is easy to miss because it shows up once a year, and its deadline falls in the month before the charge. In Subgrove, add Planet Fitness twice: the monthly dues, and a yearly $49 item dated to the 25th of the month before the fee (the notice deadline, not the charge date) with its reminder a week ahead. Questions people ask about cancelling Planet Fitness

Can I cancel Planet Fitness online? Often, yes. Planet Fitness now lists the member portal on its website as one of three ways to end a membership, alongside visiting your home club or mailing it a letter. It also says policies vary by state and location, so if your account shows no cancel option, use the club or the mail.

Can I cancel at a different Planet Fitness? Plan on using your home club. Planet Fitness sends membership and billing questions to the home club, and a different location may not be able to process the request.

When will my last charge be? If the club receives your request by the 10th, the 17th's dues shouldn't be drafted. After the 10th, expect one more monthly charge. The annual fee needs notice by the 25th of the month before it posts.

Is there a cancellation fee? Not on No Commitment memberships. Memberships with a minimum term charge a $58 buyout if you end them early.
