Does Monarch Money Work in the UK?
App Comparisons · The Subgrove Team · · 4 min read
Short answer: not officially — Monarch's site lists the US and Canada, and it doesn't mention the UK. Its Canada page announces "Monarch now available in Canada," and that's the full list. When we checked on 30 September 2026, Monarch's iPhone app appeared in Apple's US and Canadian App Stores but not the UK one.
Our country-by-country Monarch guide covers the wider picture. This page goes deeper on the UK.
What Monarch Actually Says
Monarch is an aggregator-first budgeting app. Its help centre says it supports "over 13,000 different financial institutions through our data providers," but the only countries its site names are the US and Canada.
Currency is the bigger problem. Monarch's International Accounts and Currency article says the app shows everything with a "$" symbol, "does not differentiate between currencies behind the scenes and does not perform any currency conversion," and recommends "only connecting accounts that are USD or CAD." It adds that Monarch "does not have plans to expand currency support in the near future." A £1,000 balance would read as "$1,000."
Could You Use It Manually From the UK?
To be fair to Monarch, it isn't only a bank feed. Its help centre explains how to add accounts manually, create manual transactions, and import transactions from a CSV file, which it notes is "available on web only."
So someone in the UK could, in principle, run Monarch by hand through its web app, uploading CSV exports from their bank. You'd be paying in US dollars (Monarch "charges and refunds only in USD") for an aggregator you aren't using, with sterling figures shown as "$" and no UK App Store listing. Monarch doesn't say whether it accepts UK sign-ups at all.
What UK Users Use Instead
An open banking app. The UK has had open banking since 2018. Open Banking Limited counts "over 18 million active users" of apps and payment tools built on it. Two home-grown options stand out:
- Emma. Its plan comparison says the free Basic plan lets you budget and "track wasteful subscriptions" with two bank logins. Plus, at £4.99 a month, raises that to four. Our free Emma alternative page covers the trade-offs.
- Snoop. A free money management app that says it helps you "stop subscriptions you don't use." Its FAQ adds that "you need to connect at least one bank or credit card account to use Snoop." Snoop Plus costs £5.99 a month.
For automatic detection and a full budget in pounds, either fits better than Monarch.
Your bank's own app. It will usually show recurring payments, but only for that account. Card, App Store and joint-account subscriptions slip through.
A spreadsheet. Honest and free, and we publish a template. It just won't remind you before anything renews.
A Tracker That Doesn't Need Your Bank
If you mainly wanted a clear view of your recurring charges, a manual tracker avoids the geography problem. Subgrove is built that way:
- No bank connection, so no country gate. You type in your subscriptions. Nothing asks where you bank. See tracking without bank linking.
- GBP and USD, each kept as billed. A streaming service in pounds and a US software tool in dollars each keep their real currency instead of becoming one ambiguous "$". Our multi-currency guide explains how, including that we don't do live exchange-rate conversion.
- Reminders before renewal, on the free plan. Push and email alerts before every renewal are free, as are monthly and yearly totals and the renewal calendar.
- iPhone, Android and desktop. It's a PWA, so it installs from the browser on any device and works offline.
What You Give Up — Honestly
Subgrove isn't a full budgeting app, and Monarch is. There are no category budgets, cash-flow reports, investment tracking or net-worth view. If you want the whole picture, Emma, Snoop or our Monarch Money alternatives comparison will serve you better.
There's also no automatic transaction import. You can paste a bank statement and Subgrove picks out likely subscriptions in your browser, but that's a paste, not a live feed. The free plan covers five subscriptions. Unlimited tracking, household sharing, free-trial alerts and price-increase alerts are Pro.
