Rocket Money Doesn't Work in Germany — What Does

App Comparisons · The Subgrove Team · · Updated · 4 min read

Short answer: no, Rocket Money is not available in Germany. Its own help centre says so plainly: "Rocket Money is only available to users located within the United States and with U.S. based banks." There's no German version, no EU launch announced, and no workaround, because the requirement is a US bank, not a US location.

Why a German Launch Isn't Simply Pending

Rocket Money's core trick, spotting subscriptions automatically, comes from reading your transactions through a US data aggregator built on American banking infrastructure.

Germany has its own bank-data plumbing. PSD2 has been German law since January 2018, and account information services can read your accounts, but only with your explicit consent. Those are different rails, and Rocket Money was never built against them. For the wider picture across the EU, see Rocket Money in Europe.

What People in Germany Try Instead

A bank-linked finance app. Germany has a strong home-grown option in Finanzguru (it also covers most Austrian banks, but no Swiss ones — see Finanzguru alternatives). It connects to more than 4,000 banks and providers, shows your contracts and monthly fixed costs, and lets you cancel contracts in the app, all in its free version. One trap: Emma, the UK money app, doesn't cover Germany. Its help centre lists the UK, US and Canada only.

Your bank's own app. Every Lastschrift and card payment shows up in your Sparkasse, Volksbank or N26 app, which is enough for a simple setup. The limit is that it only sees money leaving that account.

A spreadsheet. No shame in it; we publish a free template. What it lacks is reminders, the part that saves you money before a renewal lands.

The Approach That Skips the Bank Entirely

Trackers where you enter subscriptions yourself make the geography question disappear. No bank connection means no rails, and no rails means no country gate.

Subgrove is built on exactly this trade, and for a German user the consequences are specific:

  • It works here without caveats. There's no eligibility check, because you're keeping a list and lists don't care about IBANs.
  • It handles euros and dollars together. Netflix bills in EUR, your US software tools bill in USD. Multi-currency tracking records each in the currency it bills in and gives you a monthly total per currency — no live conversion, so the numbers don't drift.
  • It never asks for your online banking login. No PIN, no TAN, no account access to consent to. Our guide to tracking without bank linking sets out the reasoning.
  • It installs like a normal app on any device. It's a PWA, so the same tracker runs on your iPhone, your Android and your laptop, and works offline.
  • It warns you before the renewal. Push and email reminders are on the free plan.

Two German Rules That Reward Knowing Your Dates

German law makes cancelling easier, as long as you act in time:

  • The Kündigungsbutton. Since 1 July 2022, a business that lets you sign an ongoing contract on its website must offer a cancel button labelled "Verträge hier kündigen" (or equally clear wording), leading to a confirmation page (§312k BGB).
  • Monthly notice after the first term. For contracts concluded from 1 March 2022, an auto-renewal clause is only valid if you can then cancel at any time with at most one month's notice (§309 Nr. 9 BGB).

And if a charge slips through, an authorised SEPA-Basislastschrift can be reclaimed from your bank within eight weeks of the debit (§675x BGB). That refunds the payment; it doesn't end the contract.

What You Give Up — Honestly

Rocket Money cancels subscriptions on your behalf and negotiates bills down. Subgrove does neither: it shows what you pay and warns you before a renewal, and the cancelling is yours. Our cancellation guide covers the DIY route.

You also forgo automatic detection from bank data. You type your subscriptions in, or paste transactions from your banking app into the statement import. That matching happens in your browser, handles euro amounts like 12,99, and nothing is uploaded. Here's how to spot subscriptions in a statement.

Common Questions About Rocket Money in Germany

Is Rocket Money available in Germany? No. Its help centre limits it to users in the United States with US-based banks. There is no German or EU version.

Does Rocket Money work with German banks? No. Sparkassen, Volksbanken, Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank, ING, DKB and N26 all sit outside the US banking rails Rocket Money connects to.

Can I use Rocket Money in Germany with a VPN? No. A VPN masks your location, but it can't give you the US-based bank Rocket Money requires.

What's the German equivalent of Rocket Money? For bank-linked contract tracking and cancellation, Finanzguru is the closest. For tracking without any bank connection, a manual tracker like Subgrove works here.
